How The New Credit CARD Act Impacts You

Because of the many poor business practices that led to the U.S. economic collapse, new laws were created and put into place in an effort to protect citizens, especially in the area of credit cards.  The new Credit CARD (Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure) Act that was signed into law in May of 2009 put forth several guidelines and restrictions for credit card companies.  Because the bill is quite involved and full of legalese, you may be left wondering “how does it actually impact me”? Chase Credit Card Company Says New Laws Cut Income Drastically

The Associated Press reports that credit card giant JPMorgan Chase & Co expects that its credit card income will drop by as much as $750 million because of the new credit laws that went into place recently. As a result of this loss of income, the company says it needs to cut off a large number of consumers from their credit.

Small Business Credit Card Customers Protected

At least one credit card company is not providing many of the benefits that consumers get under the Credit CARD Act of 2009 to small business owners. That company, Bank of America, will not give small business credit card customers protections that include the agreement not to raise interest rates on existing card balances.

Today’s college student uses credit cards for everything from purchasing textbooks to paying for meals. However, with a recent law change, it has become more difficult for the student to secure such credit cards on their own. Now, students have to turn to parents not only to help them to pick the right college to attend, but also to help them to choose a credit card to take with them.
